MLS-Rumors.net is reporting that midfielder Ervin Skela might be joining the Union sometime before the end of the transfer window. He is a 33 year old Albanian international that has played for several clubs over his 17 year career. Not sure if there is any truth to this rumor, especially since the midfield looks to be pretty crowded already with the Union's most recent acquisitions. Nevertheless, here is a look at Ervin's biography on wikipedia.

Union Acquire Central Defender & Le Toux Receives Green Card

The Union announced that they have signed Juan Diego González Alzate, a central defender from Colombia. I don't know much about him except that he played extensively in South America, but you can check his bio out here, on the Union website.

They also announced another bit of interesting news, Sebastian Le Toux has received his green card, which makes him available for selection in the US National Team. Might not be a bad idea given his recent form!

NY Red Bulls Released John Wolyniec. Should We Pick Him Up?

The Red Bulls waived longtime forward John Wolyniec to make room for their 3rd DP to be announced on August 3rd. I think this the perfect time to pick him up. Sure, he's not flashy and doesn't score a boatload of goals, but he is a veteran who can hold the ball, create space for other players, and can still score a timely goal here and there. All in all he would be a good veteran to bring in to help in the latter stages of a game. What do you think? Would he be a solid pickup? Leave your comments below.

JT Noone Officially Signed, Brian Perk Released

The Union finally signed midfielder and Temple product, JT Noone today. Now for those of you that read this blog you know that I have been high on this player from the start. I only got to see a few youtube clips here and there, but the main reason I wanted him to make the team is because he brings some local flavor to the squad. I was pleased to head that Nowak thought enough of him to have him train with the team this whole season and had him join the Harrisburg City Islanders to get him some playing time. Unfortunately, 3rd string goalkeeper Brian Perk became a casualty as a result of this move. Which sucks. But wait, they had a free roster spot open. Why did they HAVE to cut Perk? Ah, that's the million dollar question my friend. Could some defensive reinforcements be on the way? Possibly. There is some time left in the summer transfer window so we shall see what Nowak and CO. have up their sleeve. So what do you think of this move? Leave your comments below.

Trade: Justin Mapp to the Union

The Union have acquired midfielder Justin Mapp from the Chicago Fire for allocation money. He is a nice addition to the squad and was made to provide some more depth. Makes me wonder if this might mean Roger Torres will be out for a significant period of time, since they had signed another midfielder Eduardo Coudet just days ago. So what do you think about this trade? Think that they still need to pickup a defender to shore up the defense? Or do you think that they need another experienced striker to help score some goals? Eduardo Coudet signs with the Union. From what I saw in the Man Utd match, he looks like a talented veteran who will provide leadership and allow the forwards more freedom. He is definitely a nice pickup at this stage of the season and will provide more depth in the second half as the Union make their push for the playoffs. Hopefully Novak can sign anoher central defender to help cut down on the mistakes in the back.

ESPN.com featured an article about the best young talent in the MLS. Two out of the five just happen to be Philadelphia Union players.

Jonathan Tannenwald of the philly.com bog The Goalkeeper had an interesting post about Philly fans profanity during the Man Utd friendly. I for one am tired of the constant bashing of Philly fans (It's tired and overplayed) and he does a good job defending us in this post.

Finally, the world cup dream is about to end. Who will win? For the Netherlands, alot depends on Wesley Schneijder. If Spain are abe to contain him, then Spain will win this game. But, Arjen Robben is also a gamebreaker for Holland and has scored alot of big goals for them and his club Champions League finalists Bayern Munich this past yr. Can he be the difference here? Ye he could be. But, I am willin to bet that Spain finds a way to keep both those players at bay and are able to manufacture a few goals. But they will have to be patient. That is their strong suit. Iniesta and Xavi will have to work the ball around the pitch and Spain will have to pass, pass, pass all day long. My prediction?
Spain 2-1 over the Netherlands. Enjoy!

Shavar Thomas Traded

Today the Union reported that Shavar Thomas was traded to the Kansas City Wizards (Where he played from 2004-2006) for two 2nd round draft choices and allocation money. All in all, a good trade as today was the deadline day to get rid of any and all players that you don't want to pay for the rest of the season. Also, we get two draft picks for a guy that couldn't get on the field! And on top of that allocation money! And Peter Nowak and his staff show again how good they are at making deals. (Both trades with DC United, anyone?) Hopefully this is a precursor to a much BIGGER move, in that they will use some of that newly acquired allocation money for a DP. (Allocation money? WTH??) We shall see. Only time will tell. Now that the World Cup is widning down and more and more teams are getting bounced, we should start seeing some more action on the transfer front.

Michael Ballack is a free agent after being let go by Chelsea (my favorite English team) after this season. He is 33 and still playing well, although not at a high enough level for the English Premier League. He is a good target for the Union to sign this summer. I think he would be perfect first DP signing because of the German history in Pennsylvania. He is a tough player and isn't afraid to get physical so he is an ideal piece for Peter Nowak. Oh yeah, he is also a quality midfielder who would instantly put the Union in the mix for the playoff race. What do you think? Leave your comments below.

With the World Cup going at full blast and MLS on pause for two weeks, I have taken this time to take a bit of a break. So forgive me for not posting the highlights of that atrocious Kansas City Wizards game. Now that the Union have some time off, I would like to point out that their USL-2 minor league affiliate, the Harrisburg City Islanders have an important, naye, VERY important game coming up. They advanced into the 2nd round due to their 4-2 trouncing of the Brooklyn Italians.
So, now is as good a time as any to go out to the Skyline Complex at 7p.m. in Harrisburg on June 22nd to support your teams USL-2 affiliate! They will face the Long Island Rough Riders and if they win, they will move on to face the big, bad New York Red Bulls June 29th on home turf! Yes, you will get a chance to boo them again!

Philly.com is reporting that Italian star defender Fabio Cannavaro might be interested in joining the MLS and is being pursued by the LA Galaxy, NY Red Bulls, and our Philadelphia Union. He is currently out of contract and last played with Italian Serie A club Juventus.

Also, to update a previous rumor posted on this site, further down the philly.com article they bring up that striker Carlos Ruiz is closer than ever to joining the Union.

So what do you think? A little surprised? Think that Charlies Davies got snubbed? Bob Bradley had some tough decisions to make and if Davies was ready to play he would've been there, no doubt. I for one am surprised that Findlay got the call but, since Davies wasn't ready I think Bradley was trying to give himself some speedy options up top. Not that surprised that Conor Casey was not selected because he wasn't going to play if Ching was healthy. They probably don't feel that there is a need for another target forward. My guess is that Bradley will cut 2 defenders, 3 midfielders and 2 forwards when it's all said and done. You don't need as many forwards because Landon and Dempsey both can play up top and Buddle, Findlay, Johnson are all basically the same type of player. My guess as to who gets cut? I would say...

3 Games in 1 Week, 3 Disgraceful Performances

Well, we made it through a rough stretch that involved alot of traveling and 3 games in 1 week. The performances were dreadful! At times it seemed as though it couldn't get any worse, but then it got worse. Red cards, Le Toux getting injured, the terrible defense. When does it end? One thing is for sure, the team defense needs to improve for the team to win some games. Orozco and Califf in the middle have not been stellar at all and one might wonder if we will keep Orozco at the end of the year when his loan deal expires? Califf has been ok when he is on the field playing, but inconsistent. I actually think that we are fine with Harvey and Arrieta as our team fullbacks and probably one of the best combos in the league. The other problem is that the defensive depth on this team is paper-thin. Shea Salinas is not bad in the fullback position, but Toni Stahl is dreadful. He might be more suited to be a defensive midfielder, but a good fullback he is not. And what ever happened to Shavar Thomas?? That guy can't even get on the field! With such a small roster, that speaks volumes. He is lucky that there isn't any depth, otherwise he probabaly would've been cut already! Finally, Chris Seitz has been absolutely dreadful. I will give him somewhat of a pass since the defense hasn't been too good, BUT he has let in some marshmellow soft goals in!

Ok, now for some positives to take from these past 3 games. Really, not much. We showed a little bit of an ability to climb back out of a hole, but still have not came back to win or tie a game. Other than that it was nice to see little Jack Mac scored his first goal! And it was a nice touch. What did you think of the past 3 games? Leave your comments below.

Thoughts on the Red Bulls Game

Well, what can you say? Another good effort spoiled by stupid mistakes. The 2nd goal was a blatant hand ball by Michael Orozco, who normally wouldn't commit such a dumb act. Also, we have to put away good chances. Let's face it,the two chances I thought were huge, aka, the first shot at goal by Le Toux and the missed header by McInerney, quality teams put those chances away. We didn't. The bottom line is that we continued our trend of totally out-playing an opponent and we ended up losing because of mistakes. Those need to stop. The good news is that in a few days (Tuesday, 8 pm) we will be able to make up for this game. I believe that we will play better and come through with a win. Yes, that's right, I predict a 2-0 win over the Red Bulls on Tuesday! You heard it hear first! So what did you think of the game today? Leave your comments below.

Thoughts on the Toronto FC Game & a Look Ahead

MY TAKE
I am going to start out by saying that first and foremost the Danny Califf red card was incredibly stupid and dictated how the game was going to go. Secondly, Chris Seitz needs to sharpen up his skills and cut down on the mistakes. Sure, mistakes are going to happen but this surely was a winnable game in a hostile environment. I like the fact that the Union controlled the game being one man down and was encouraged by their play, but was not happy with the results. The fact of the matter is, we need to cut down on not just mistakes in general, but stupid mistakes. I get it, they are trying to announce themselves and make teams aware that they are going to have a physical game. They play the Peter Nowak, old school style. Most teams, notably expansion teams, try to get at least a point in a game like this. If we came away with a point that would be considered a victory. A loss points you in the wrong direction. I know we are an expansion team and we are learning, but to be honest, this is a league that you can take advantage of teams on the downswing. Teams that are constantly changing their personnel (especially up until the MLS Transfer deadline) like Toronto FC, basically are in the same situation as the Union, being an expansion team with all new players. The bottom line is that you have a good chance to at least tie this team. We didn't do that. Now we have to face a good NY Red Bulls team on the rise, twice in a week.

THE GOOD
The Jordan Harvey goal was a beauty.
I know I'm going to be saying this all year but Roger Torres is a beast. He is already getting recognized for his dynamic playmaking.

Sebastian Le Toux is a revelation at forward. He displays the Carlos Tevez like approach of never stopping, always going full speed ahead, hoping to make something happen. He will be loved in Philly.

More and more I am liking Christian Arrieta at fullback. I think he will be a nice player in this league. He not only is solid in defense, he pushes forward at times to help out on offense. He needs to do more of that. I've seen him alot with my PR Islanders squad and am not surprised he is doing well but I think he can do better.

A LOOK AHEAD
We need to win both games against the Red Bulls. No doubt about it. I think we need a win in a league game to make a jump in the standings and a win in the US Open Cup because I think the more games we get in for our squad, the better. It will go a long way into helping them become a better team. At a minimum, I would hope the Union get a tie in the league game and a win in the Open Cup.

According to the USL website, Toni Stahl has been loaned out to the Union's USL-2 League affiliate, the Harrisburg City Islanders. It also states that Temple product JT Noone is there as well, so there is hope for him yet! It doesn't say for how long, but they do need the work. I for one think this is great news that we are actually using our minor league teams right away and am encouraged that this partnership with Harrisburg and Reading United is going to be a success. Like in baseball, young soccer players need to get in games to grow and become better professionals. This becomes hard without a proper reserve league for MLS. The importance of a reserve league is not lost on MLS and it is something that they plan to work on under the new collective bargaining agreement. Until then, this is the best system. Send players "down" just like in baseball, hockey, etc. and let them develop.

MLS is reporting that they are in talks with Villareal star Robert Pires to possibly join a club after the World Cup. It has been reported previously that the NY Red Bulls were interested in the Frenchman but according to the article, they are not the team that he will be going to if he should sign. So there is a chance Pires may come to Philadelphia? Interesting.... Leave your thoughts below.

Thoughts on Game vs DC United

First off what an incredible game from start to finish. From Le Toux's first goal to his last, it was the best soccer game I have ever seen in person. (I have only seen 3, so talk about a small sample size!!) Le Toux was fantastic. Moreno was invaluable creating space and muscling for the ball. His picture perfect pass for Le Toux's second goal was class. And Arrieta looks to be the problem solver at left center back. Califf, the captain organized his defense and lead the way. All in all great game and hope to see many more just like that in the future. It was a dream way to open at home. The only negatives I would say were the two cheap goals we let up, but alls well that ends well. Thursday the Union take on Toronto FC in Toronto. What did you think about the game? The Union made the signing of Christian Arrieta official today. Just in time! He will be available for tomorrow's game vs DC United. Could he be making an appearance? Only time will tell.

Carlos Ruiz to the Union?

Soccerbyives is reporting from sources within MLS that the Union are looking to sign former Galaxy and FC Dallas forward Carlos Ruiz. He was a pretty consistent forward from 2002 through 2006, scoring double digit goals in each of those seasons. In 2007, he started to go downhill and bounced around a few teams before making his last appearance in MLS for Toronto FC in 2008. All told, he scored 82 goals in MLS from 2002-2008 so he is a proven goal scorer. But can he regain the fine form that earned him MVP honors in the 2002 season while scoring 24 goals? He is currently enjoying a fine season for Puebla of the Mexican First Division scoring 15 goals in 35 games, so it is possible. Personally I think if we are taking a look at Carlos it is definitely because Novak believes there might be a problem scoring goals. What do you guys think? Leave your comments below.

The Union announced today that they will play the NY Red Bulls on April 27th 8pm @Red Bull Park for the US Open Cup. The winner advances to play the New England Revolution on May 12th at an undetermined site.

Christian Arrieta? No word on the signing of Christian Arrieta yet, but Peter Nowak says that it is imminent. The 2009 USL Player of the year will shore up a backline that will be without Toni Stahl because of a red card in the first game and recently cut David Myrie. Also, no word yet on Danny Szetela, but Nowak mentions that he is a real possibility to join the team as well.

And, who do you think the Philadelphia Union should add to their squad this summer now that MLS is allowing teams to be able to add a 2nd DP?? Raul from Real Madrid has been mentioned several times as a possibility. Clarence Seedorf as well. Could we see both head across the Atlantic to wear Blue and Gold? It's possible. Csnphilly.com has an intresting article on Nowak meaning business. While not official, it reports that Christian Arrieta will be joining the club. Here is an excerpt, "Nowak indicated Cristian Arrieta would be signed shortly to give the team more of a veteran presence on the backline. The 30-year-old Italian played last season for the Puerto Rico Islanders of the United Soccer Leagues First Division before recently joining Union on a trial basis."

Soccerbyives is reporting that it is none other than former U-20 US International Danny Szetela, who was cut by DC United just last week. He is a midfielder who has played in Spain & Italy. 2009 USL MVP Christian Arrieta is currently on trial with the Union this week. This could also explain the reason why David Myrie was released earlier today. They probably are working out the contract details at this time. Christian played last year with my USL team Puerto Rico Islanders.

Today the Union released David Myrie. I wasn't surprised by it but I will say I was surprised when they picked him in the Expansion draft considering he hardly played if at all last season with the Chicago Fire. There were a couple other guys I would've had on the Fire that were exposed over him. But I guess this was a case of taking a chance on a young talent and misfiring.

Reaction & Highlights of the Seattle Game

Some thoughts and reactions from the very first Union game ever. I thought that Novak came out with a very interesting lineup, having Mwanga as a central midfielder and throwing not just one but two rookies in the starting lineup as well as a few 2nd year players. I was really surprised that Miglioranzi did not make the start. I know that Fred was out so you had to make do, but that is even more of a reason to have Stefani in there are he is a veteran and would've been a calming presence on the pitch. That being said, he didn't really make that much of an impact on the field.
Myrie was getting exposed badly by Zakuani all day long. It was too little too late when he left the game because of an injury. Mwanga is not a central midfielder and that became real evident. You just cannot take advantage of his skills unless he is up top. Also, Stahl had a bad call on the first yellow, but that is all the more reason to lay off a little bit when he got red after that atrocious kick. Other than the bad tackling he wasn't too bad at all.

The Good

Roger Torres is a beast. He is going to be a really, really good player in this league. And he is still very young.

Danny Califf was very composed and played real well during the game. He will only get better and he will show he is one of the best central defenders in MLS.

Orozco is a nice fullback and showed good composer in the midfield. He will be a good player in this league.

I didn't see much of Jack McIerney & Amobi Okugo but they looked real composed and calm in spite of the situation they were in. My hope was that Jack was going to get a lot of playing time in Harrisburg but we may see alot of him this season.

All in all there was a lot of positives of this first game. The Union got to gauge where they rank against of the MLS best teams. They got to play in a hostile enviroment on national TV. That is not always easy and they got to taste a bit of that. Let's be honest, it felt like a playoff atmosphere and that will go along way to help prepare this team for their home opener in front of their fans. The more this team plays together, the more they will get a feel for how each other moves around the pitch.

In less than 24 hours Philadelphia Union open up against the Seattle Sounders! How long have we've waited for this day? And for it to be finally here is for me a mixture of joy and excitement! Just think, finally we can watch the team play a real game. That for me is the kicker! (I know, I know, absolutely awful play on words)
Watching this franchise being built from the ground up has been an incredible experience so far and am looking forward to many good years of soccer being played right here in the Delaware Valley! Enjoy the action gang! GO UNION!!

Valencia has announced their summer preseason tour and that includes a stop in Philadelphia on July 31st to play our Philadelphia Union! Which means you get to see some of this man pictured here in action! Yes, that’s right, that’s Valencia superstar David Villa! Hopefully him and David Silva are still on the team by then…Who’s psyched???? Also, apparently there is a rumor floating about on the Big Soccer boards that the Union also have a friendly with Manchester City in the works, so I will dig and see what I can find about that. But so far, so good wouldn’t you say? Stay tuned!

Yesterday the Union announced the signing of Colombian midfielder Roger Torres. The 18 year old joins them from the Colombian First Division side America De Cali. He impressed the coaches having been on trial with the squad the past couple of weeks. It's a one-year loan deal so chances are he may or may not stick with the club after this season. It is MLS policy to not do a loan deal unless there is an option to buy the player outright afterwards so it's a win-win situation, especially when it involves a young player with talent. As you can see the squad is starting to fill out and the last couple of roster spots are being taken. For those of you holding out all hope for local product JT Noone, he should know his fate soon.

Phase 2 of Training camp now over

The Union have returned home and Peter Nowak gave the players a few days off before heading to Tampa on Thursday to begin the third and final phase of training camp. The team spent the first phase in Greensboro, NC and the 2nd in Guadalajara, Mexico. Decisions will have to be made on who to keep on the 24 man roster. One particular player that has impressed is All American Temple University product JT Noone. The local boy has been playing a number of positions, midfielder & striker. He scored a goal against Chivas de Guadalajara and had an assist against Universidad de Guadalajara. I for one think it would be an excellent addition to the squad expecially since he is from the area. Only 19 days until First Kick!

US Open Matchup!

The US Open first round matchups were announced today and the Union begin their tournament in April vs the New York Red Bulls. To those who do not know, this is the biggest tournament for soccer clubs in the United States. It is the oldest cup competition in the US and is among the oldest soccer tournaments in the world (Believe it or not). And the beauty of this tourney is that anybody can win. Yes even the small Sunday teams can compete and win this competition. Very tough but it is possible. Some local teams have won this competition several times in the past including Bethlehem Steel from Bethlehem, PA who won it a record 5 times and the Ukranian Nationals from Philadelphia who won it 4 times. The Union today partnered up with the Harrisburg City Islanders. The Islanders became the Union's 2nd minor league affiliate after the Reading United of the PDL league (Player Development League). The Islanders are in the 2nd division of the USL. The Union will have the ability to determine which Islander players are able to make the jump to MLS and also loan them their players that they feel need more playing time to develop. The Philadelphia Union announced on Wednesday that individual tickets will go on sale starting at 10am on Wednesday, March 3rd for the two home games at the Linc, which include the inaugural Home Opener against D.C. CBA Negotiations Stall

MLS fans might have a reason to worry as the old Collective Bargaining Agreement is set to expire at midnight tonight without a new one in place. The players want less restrictions on players (i.e. free agency) to be able to move to other teams within the league and also a bump in their salaries. For now it looks as though they aren't going to strike. The owners contend that they must control player movement within the league as well as their salaries so that they can keep the league intact and growing. They must meet somewhere in the middle not only for themselves but for the sport itself. Let's face it, soccer is growing in this country. And this being a World Cup year, it is more important than ever to get this thing done. Especially since the Union's inaugural game vs the Seattle Sounders is just around the corner! (March 25th)

Here is some news and thoughts that I wanted to throw out at you today.

Some good news first off, it was reported yesterday that Philly wil be hosting the US friendly vs Turkey on May 29th. It starts at 2pm @ the Linc and tickets start at $25 so it's not a bad deal at all. Come out and support your national team and see your favorite American players live!

Secondly, there is a good article on Soccerbyives.net, Chris Seitz talks about his excitement when he found out he was traded to Philly and how grateful he is for the opportunity to become our teams FIRST starting goalkeeper.

And check out this article on Jack McInerney. He scored a goal against UNC on Saturday which isn't bad for a 17 yr old.

Also last friday there was a nice little article on CSNphilly.com Fred and Stefani Miglioranzi so be sure to check that out too.

It has been reported that the Red Bulls are looking to add Raul or Thierry Henry or even Paulo Maldini as their DP in the summer. Most likely one or two of those guys would be added after the World Cup (Unless it's Maldini because he's retired). But that brings the question, who are the Philadelphia Union going to add? I'm sure they are keeping a roster spot open for a possible addition but do they know who they want yet? I think that would be a good question to ask Peter Nowak next time I see him!

Just a couple things to go over from this past week. It was a Big, big news week for the Union. You can tell that the season is coming upon us now because it is starting to pickup newswise.

First, we start off with the Philadelphia Union forming a strategic partnership with 6ABC. The Full story is here. Let me start off by saying that this is an ingenious move if only because that the usual local sports venue (Comast Sportsnet) will be tied up with Phillies, Sixers, & Flyers over the Spring & Summer. Also, you could kind of predict ABC televising their games especially since oh yeah JP Dellacamera of ESPN is doing the play-by-play for all local Union games.

The Union break camp! Mlsnet.com reports that the Philadelphia Union held their first training session today. "It was a good start," said Union team manager Peter Nowak. "Everybody has been excited to start the preseason. They know each other because they have played against each other. It's good to be together for the first time."

The Union is scheduled to begin their preseason against the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, N.C., details yet to come.

Happy that Nowak is adding yet another National Team player to the squad? I for one is liking our defense a whole lot. 2010 MLS Superdraft

Well the 2010 MLS Superdraft has come and gone. Now it's time to evaluate the talent our team has brought in. Overall I give the Union an A+++ for being able to use their resources to bring in alot of young talent to help build this franchise. I marvel at the way this team is being built because the front office seem to be doing every right. Now to examine the spoils....

1st Round
#1 Overall- Danny Mwanga, Forward, Oregon State
We've known now for a week who this pick was going to be and I've always liked this guy. From what I've heard is far and away the best player in the draft and most ready to step in and play. He will help with his creativity and ability to score goals.

#6 Overall- Amobi Okugo, Midfielder, UCLA
Very talented midfielder and will hopefully gros into a big time talent.

#7 Overall- Jack McIerney, Forward, Cobb Soccer Club
I called it from the start! Once The U started picking up first round draft picks I believed that we would pick up McIerney, who has been impressive with the US U-17's.

2nd Round
Toni Stahl, midfielder, UConn
He is a bit of an older "prospect" but he was a first round talent. Surprised he fell this far, but we benefited. Hopefully he does Philadelphia proud!

3rd Round
Kyle Nakazawa, midfielder, UCLA
I don't know much about him but according to the Union website he was a 2009 semifinalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy, First-team NSCAA All-American and All-Far West, First-team All-Pac-10 so that all has to count for something.

4th Round
Brian Perk, GK, UCLA
Teammate of Nakazawa's and Okugo's who was rated by some as the best goalkeeper in the draft. I like the pick bc it adds some more competition and gives us some cover. You can never be too sure and plus if he turns out to be good, we can probably trade him or Knighton (or Seitz for that matter) for a player or a future draft pick.

The Union adds University of Maryland Assistant Rob Vartughian to the Peter Nowak's staff to be the goalkeeper coach. He's worked with Nowak on the US Olympic team and helped to guide the Terps to an Elite 8 finish in last month's NCAA Tournament. Check out the full story on the MLS website here.

With Danny Califf and Chris Seitz in the fold, what is next for the Union? It seems as though they are putting the pieces in place to have a solid defense this season. Peter Nowak is a smart coach and knows that best way to create a team is to begin building from the back. Solidify your defense first with proven veterans and young talent and then concentrate on building a dynamic offense. In this league, having a good defense is key. You cannot hide your deficiencies in the back like you can in other leagues.

I would think that the next step is to acquire a creative midfielder in free agency to create space for teammates and initiate the attack. I think that this should be our DP selection. Look at what Freddie Ljunberg did last season for Seattle. Then maybe add a good young striker in the draft. There are plenty to be had. Teal Bunbury from Akron stands out. Although it would be very hard to ignore central defender Ike Opara in the draft should he sign with MLS, but you would have to expect him to leave for Europe in a few years with the hype surrounding him. I would rather have a good young goal scorer like a Bunbury or Andrew Wiedeman from California. Then it's hard to ignore that there are plenty of talented midfielders available in this draft. U.S. Under 17's Luis Gil and Jack McInerney to name a few, but you would have to think eventually they would be making their way to Europe. You might say, "Who cares? We can just replenish as they go". True, but I would like to have some solid talent here that we can keep for the long term and concentrate on that in our first season, and then build from that. Sometimes those players that attract the European clubs end up being cancers for your team bc they want to leave so bad. And who knows, they might stay with your team or might end up leaving.
So what do you think the Union should do? Which players should they pick in the Superdraft in Philly on Jan 13th?

What i am most happy about is that they selected Le Toux which I think is an outright steal from Seattle. He just had an off year but I believe he is a starting quality forward. I love the Shea Salinas pick bc he is ayoung improving midfielder who works hard but really dissapointed we did not pick up Convey. Moreno is a nice pickup bc he is starting quality, capable of having a big season.

My Mock Expansion Draft

Hey Folks! As promised I am conjured up my own personal mock draft for the expansion draft results that will unfold tommorow. Now I am likely to get most of these (if not all) wrong, but here is my list nonetheless. Now in no particular order, here is what I would choose if I was the Manager of the Union!

Seattle Sounders FC: Sebastian Le Toux-Forward
Now alot of people are going to bewondering why i didn't select fullback James Riley or the "homegrown" Stephen King. The truth is, this guy a is a creative 6 foot forward who can play midfielder and has the technical abilities you don't normally see from forwards in this league. And frankly, how or why would you turn down a chance to get a creative 6 foot forward? There aren't too many of those in this league. Grab him if you get the chance, you can add talent in the back from other teams.

Columbus Crew- Frankie Hejduk-Defender
You want a binafide clubhouse leader and a winner? Pick this guy up. He still has the skills and has won a championship. He will be the perfect piece to build your defense around. Yes, he is starting to get a little long in the tooth but you need a few of those guys around to be your leaders. If you don't select Hejduk then I would go with Albright from the Revolution.

Chivas USA- Eduardo Lillingston-Forward
Speedy mexican forward who can score goals. Period. Add him to the squad then you've got a guy who might be able to attract a Mexican fanbase and a damn good player.

LA Galaxy- Todd Dunivant- Defender
Todd is a bonafide good left-footed left back. Not too many good ones in the league. Not sure why LA left him exposed. It's a mistake so pick him up. The only other player i would've picked over him from this team was Dema Kovalenko but I suppose the reason why he wasn't left unprotected is the same reason why i would've chosen him! And Sure, Alan Gordon would be a fan favorite for his hard work, but he doesn't score goals at a rate that would be worth picking him at his salary.

DC United- Devon MacTavish- Midfielder
I love this hard working midfielder. He is all over the field. He is very underrated mainly bc he's been a backup his whole career but I believe picking him would be good for depth purposes. You will need a guy like this as the season goes on.

Kansas City Wizards- Herculez Gomez- Midfielder
Another quality depth guy. He seems to be always around the ball and brings much energy when he comes to the field. I've always thought he was quality (for this league) and an underrated player. Would also bring leadership and experience.

Toronto FC- Amado Guevera- Midfielder
What? A talented creative midfielder from Honduras? He was left unprotected???? How could this be??? Well he has a history of on the field issues as well as a temper and oh yeah, he doesn't get along with the new coach who ran him out of Chivas USA a year ago! Philadelphia is going to love this guy for his playmaking and his fiery demeanor on the pitch. He is relentless and should attract huge Honduran following to games to be sure. Pick him up.

NY Red Bulls- Danny Cepero- Goalkeeper
Now, people are going to wonder why I didn't go with the hometown guy Jon Conway and trust me it's not because I didn't think he was good enough. It just so happened he was on a team of a player I really thought would help the Union. Truth be told, I personally believe that the Union are going to sign a starting goalkeeper and what they really need from the expansion draft is a quality back up, which I thnk Cepero is so he fills a need. End of Story.

Real Salt Lake- Andy Williams- Midfielder
He is gifted and plays with alot of heart. As we saw in the MLS Cup final, he played until he fell over. And he just won an MLS Cup! That's why I believe he would be a great addition to this team. Can't hurt to have a few of those guys on your side.

San Jose Earthquakes- Bobby Convey- Midfielder
A the prodigal son returns. Once looked at one of the up and coming national teamers and had found a home in Europe with Reading FC. But, he has spent the last few years struggling and eventually made his way back to the US with San Jose. Maybe a trip home will help him find his form? If it does this would be an excellent pickup.

Now looking back I chose 2 forwards, 1 'keeper, 2 defenders and 5 midfielders. If I could get rid of a midfielder it would be either Mactacvish or Gomez bc theyre both really the same player and add maybe Wade Barrett from the Houston Dynamo. Either way you can't miss.

I have been reading on several news sites that Guillermo Barros Schelotto is being pushed out of Columbus. If this is true I say snap him up Nowak! He would be the perfect guy to build our team around. In fact, he just won an MLS Cup! He still has plenty of skill left and would instantly make the Union a playoff contender.

Secondly, Robbie Rogers is reported to be interested in making a move either to Europe of another MLS team. Let's grab him also while we're at it! Adding both players would be a coup for this Expansion team! It would probably put us in the playoffs in our first year. What do you think?

Union Jersey Unveiled!!!!

The Philadelphia Union made history today by unveiling their new jerseys for the upcoming season!!!! Here is a little bit of what Union president Tom Veit had to say, "There will be no mistaking the Philadelphia Union on the field or anywhere else for that matter with this jersey. We hope our supporters are as pleased with it as we are," said Philadelphia Union President, Tom Veit. “The jersey will be available market-wide at the end of next week but can be pre-ordered today at philadelphiaunion.com for delivery on the first day of availability."

The Union Gain a Celebrity Fan!

The Union website reports that Samuel Dalembert is a Union fan!
Here is an excerpt:
Dalembert was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and lived there for before moving to Montreal as a teenager. As a kid, he played soccer all the time. And he was always the tallest player on the field.

“When someone met me for the first time, they were like, ‘Whoa, this kid is big,’” Dalembert recalled. “I remember the kids thinking, ‘Is he playing the right sport?’ I enjoyed soccer. Everyone played soccer. I didn’t even know what basketball was until I was 14 and I saw Dr. J throw down a dunk.”

Maybe he can play for them as a striker in the NBA offseason? What do you think?

Important Dates to Remember...

As the end of the MLS season approaches and the playoffs near, reality begins to settle in on us long waiting, patient Philadelphia Union fans. We will have players to root for in the coming months. Not too long now fellow Unionists! Some important dates to remember:

1.Nov 25th is the expansion draft for our team. (The Union will select a player from each team up to 11 players)
2.Sometime in late November I'm told, the team plans to release the team jerseys.
(I cannot wait to get one, hint hint to anybody looking for an Xmas gift for me!!)
3.Jan 14th is the Superdraft. I plan to take off for this event, although not sure what I plan to do other than go to the bar and watch the event on TV, which is probably what I would be doing here. I will check and see what the Sons of Ben are up to!

5.April 10th HOME OPENER at the Linc vs DC United so get your tickets!
